I have no sound!!!

Okay,so heres what happened......not to long ago i got a virus in my computer.I couldn't even turn it on.I lent it to this woman i know who is a computer genius so she could fix it. Well,she fixed it and gave me windows xp pro(an upgrade from just xp).In the meanwhile she fried my modem,ive already fixed that problem but i think she also might have fried my sound card.She said she did not know what to do.I think i have o buy a new sound card,which i dont want to do.Am i going to have to? It would help if you told us which sound card you have.
Have you checked the obvious? Is the sound card in its slot properly?
Download the latest drivers, thats always a good starting point.
Then check that the sound is turned on in the volume control panel.
