Slow PC - Virus?

Slow PC/Fan.

For about three days my PC has been on a go-slow. 5 minutes after I boot-up, the cooling fan goes into overdrive. And the internet runs very slowly. As I type this, the characters are appearing a second or so after typing...

I try and run McAfee anti-virus, but it get near the end, the PC restarts itself, getting back to the log-on screen. Once I log-on, I get a serious error report.

From my very numpty perspective, I think I have a virus, but I'm at a loss at how to go from here.

Help!

Just as an afterthought, would going back to a restore point rid me of any virus, should there be one?
