I am unable to change my windows XP background. I can see several desktop background options in the desktop display properties window but I am unable to select them. Any suggestions?

By 'background' do you mean your desktop picture (wallpaper)? If so just right click on your desktop and select properties, then select desktop and you should see what pictures are available for selection. I am not sure exactly what you mean, please let us have more details.
