Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I received a message to update my antivirus. After I clicked ok, my computer shut down. Now I am able to reboot it, yet only a black screen appears after the initial startup. My desktop is not visible. I am able to right click and can access the internet, which does me no good since I cannot see anything on the screen. Please advise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What operating system are you using and what Antivirus do you use? Do you regularly get these messages to update your Antivirus?

I have Windows Mellinium and I think the current antivirus I have is 9x..(?) The last time I had to take my computer in the tech uninstalled Norton and told me just to use the 9x. I now think he is a quack! Anyway, I do get the messages ocassionally, and have never had a problem allowing updates.
