I took this from the microsoft knowledge base, give a try and let us know the results:

CAUSE
This behavior may be caused by an older file from a Beta version of Microsoft Windows XP and the Internet Explorer 6 Public Preview releases. You might experience this symptom if you upgraded from a Beta release of Windows XP or from the Internet Explorer 6 Public Preview, or if you are still running a Windows XP Beta version or Internet Explorer 6 Public Preview release.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.
Remove Smart Tags Support for Internet Explorer
1. Close all open Internet Explorer windows.
2. In Control Panel, start the Add or Remove Programs tool (or the Add/Remove Programs tool).
3. Click Smart tags support for Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then click Change/Remove (or click Add/Remove).

Disable Smart Tags in Internet Explorer
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. On the Advanced tab, click to clear the Enable smart tags check box.
4. Click OK, and then restart Internet Explorer.

Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer use the same module. If you have your XP disc to hand, put in the CD drive and select windows repair.

Is it just AOL that keeps closing I.E.?
Scan your system for spy/adware with AdAware and Spybot S&D clean up what ever they find and post back.

Firstly, the bad idea was to try to un-install SP2 and revert back to SP1.

Assuming you have taken away all the Spy/Adware AND run Spybot S&D and allowed it to fix all it finds then the next step is to make a change to your registry and download I.E.6 and reinstall it.
If you make mistakes to the registry you can end having to wipe your machine and install everything from scratch so ONLY alter the key as I have written and nothing more.
Click on Start then Run and type Regedit and press enter.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}Modify or Create a DWORD and give it the name IsInstalled
Set the value data from 1 to 0 then exit the registry.

This link will take you to the download page for I.E.6
Reinstall and let us know the results.

Are you sure you went to the right key?
If you set it 0 then the windows then you are telling Windows that I.E. is not installed and that allows you to reinstall. As you can see, mine is set to 1 (3rd entry down) yours if done correctly should be 0.
