PC data transfer

If I decided to upgrade my PC, what would I need to do to transfer all the information across from my current machine to a new one? Even I should be able to handle info that's contained on CD-ROM, but what about important systems like virus and internet security that I bought online, and which are too big to stick on a floppy disc? Is there a simple way to copy everything onto new hard drive?

Thanks,

Gary

You cannot transfer installed programs but if you mean large downloaded files etc there are many ways dependant on what you have in the old PC. For example if you have a CD Writer then just copy them to disc. Otherwise we need to know what the operating system is, have you got USB slots etc.

No CD rewriter on my machine, it runs Windows 98SE. There are several unused ports at the back, but my manual doesn't give a description of what they are for. My scanner is connected via a USB port, and there is a second unsued slot by it.

OK you can transfer data from one machine to the other with a USB to USB transfer cable. You can read about it here.
