Question Rundll32 has stopped working

Hi everyone,
I bought my laptop 7 months ago. It's a Windows Vista Gateway.
I says that autochk file is not found. Also says that Windows host proces
(rundll32) has stopped working. I can hear anything, it says there is a
problem with my sound device. Is there anything I can do?
Thanks a lot,
haydee

Have you hidden a partition or drive?
Do you have a Vista installation disk?
Have you uninstalled Norton by any chance?

I remember I removed "sound man" from start up,
do that has to do with it? I also removed HP software
update. I followed somebody's advice to do that to speed
start up.
I forgot how to go to start up programs to restore the sound man.

I will help you restore the sound after we fix autochk problem. Software update programs do not slow machines down so that you would notice, at least if its only HP updater. Normally, if the autochk is missing or damaged, your machine will not boot, is this correct?
If it isnt booting, follow the instructions below, if it is booting then let us know so we can advise you differently.

First thing I would like you to do is download PTEDIT.zip from this address: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...ies/ptedit.zip
Save the file ptedit.zip to the desktop of a working PC.
Open the zip file to extract PTEDIT.exe
Next, you need to create a bootable disk, I am assuming, as it’s a fairly new pc, you don’t have a floppy drive.
Put a blank CD into your burner and select ‘Boot Disc’. I cant tell you how to do this as I don’t know which burner you will use.
Copy PTEDIT.exe to the disk and burn.
Put the CD into the disk drive of the laptop and boot it up selecting boot from disk when asked. If it dosnt ask, then you need to change the boot order in the BIOS. Post back and I will tell you how to do it.
At the command prompt, type PTEDIT and select enter.
The PowerQuest Partition Table Editor screen should now appear.
Look in the first column of the table labeled Type.
The number there should be 07, which means an installable file system.
If the value here is anything other than 07, then that means the drive is unbootable. So to change it:
Use your tab key to go to the Type box.
Hold down Alt + T to open the Set Type menu.
Select 07 on your keyboard and press Enter.
Press Alt + S to save the changes.
Press Ctrl + C to exit.
Now remove the disk and reboot your PC.

Do you have Nero7 installed?

When I click restart the laptop restarts, very slow though.
If I turn it off using the power button and turn it on again,
it doesn't show the usually "repairing disk c or checking for
disc damage" message. It appears the message that autochk
file is not found, and the it gives me the 'start
Windows normally" message highlighted.

thanks

Haydee,

Have you tried to go to start - run. Enter msconfig and hit enter. There should be a startup tab that may be where you disabled soundman from startup.

I think its best that we start right from the beginning again.
Do you know if you have SP1 installed? if you dont know then click on the orb (Start) and right click on Computer then select 'Properties' in the window that appears, it will say if you have Vista Home Premium SP1 or not.
Navigate to C:/Windows/system32 and either search or look for autochk.exe let us know if you find it.

With the sound issue, just re-install the software for Soundman.

I checked in properties and it says Windows Vista Home Edition . I don't see SP1
anywhere. Is there any other place to check for this?
