I will help you restore the sound after we fix autochk problem. Software update programs do not slow machines down so that you would notice, at least if its only HP updater. Normally, if the autochk is missing or damaged, your machine will not boot, is this correct?
If it isnt booting, follow the instructions below, if it is booting then let us know so we can advise you differently.
First thing I would like you to do is download PTEDIT.zip from this address:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...ies/ptedit.zip
Save the file ptedit.zip to the desktop of a working PC.
Open the zip file to extract PTEDIT.exe
Next, you need to create a bootable disk, I am assuming, as it’s a fairly new pc, you don’t have a floppy drive.
Put a blank CD into your burner and select ‘Boot Disc’. I cant tell you how to do this as I don’t know which burner you will use.
Copy PTEDIT.exe to the disk and burn.
Put the CD into the disk drive of the laptop and boot it up selecting boot from disk when asked. If it dosnt ask, then you need to change the boot order in the BIOS. Post back and I will tell you how to do it.
At the command prompt, type PTEDIT and select enter.
The PowerQuest Partition Table Editor screen should now appear.
Look in the first column of the table labeled Type.
The number there should be 07, which means an installable file system.
If the value here is anything other than 07, then that means the drive is unbootable. So to change it:
Use your tab key to go to the Type box.
Hold down Alt + T to open the Set Type menu.
Select 07 on your keyboard and press Enter.
Press Alt + S to save the changes.
Press Ctrl + C to exit.
Now remove the disk and reboot your PC.
Do you have Nero7 installed?
