New Device Driver - No Sound!

After discovering that I needed new drivers when I tried to run Google Earth, I bought Driver Detecive which looked at my system and gave me a list of out of date drivers. I subsequently downloaded new drivers and Google Earth now works fine. Unfortunately I now have no sound and I remember that one of the new drivers had to do with sound.

When I try to play a Media Player file I get the following message:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

My PC is an HP iMedia 5043 running Windows XP Home SP2. The Driver - according to Driver Detective - is for a "C-Media AC97 Audio Device" (is that the sound card?). I have obviously done something wrong but have absolutely no knowledge of device drivers. Can anyone help me please?

I printed off a system spec using the recomended program and so, hopefully, can supply any information required

Charlie Simpson

I have just discovered using "My Computer" that my Audio Device is a "Modem #1 Line Playback" this seems to be incorrect (although I haven't got a clue what my Audio Device is)

Alan will become famous soon enough
Open Device Manager (Press the Windows key and the Pause key together)and remove all devices under 'Sound, video and game controllers' and any 'Other devices'.
Once removed reboot the computer and let Windows re-detect the audio drivers.
Let us know how you get on.

That will disappear once you have the correct working drivers.

Thanks for your advice. I went into Device drivers but wasn't able to find the items you mentioned. However I did find an option to "Roll back to previous version" of the drivers and, having selected that the PC now works fine. Thankyou for pointing me in the right direction.
