I have recently brought an HP Pavilion dv4000 off ebay. It came with no instruction book which I am not very happy about. When I turn the computer on it says enter password - of course I do not know what the password is....!?

What shall I do, I have a reboot windows disk which I put in and nothing happens, when I press Esc, F8, F10 etc nothing happens...

Can you contact the person you bought the laptop off and request the password?

This is what I found, I have never tested it so use it at your own risk.

Maintenance and Service
Guide
HP Pavilion dv4000 Notebook PC
Compaq Presario V4000 Notebook PC

Resetting the Computer
If the computer you are servicing has an unknown password,
follow these steps to set a new password. These steps also
clear CMOS:
1. Enter an incorrect password and press enter.
2. Repeat step 1 two more times.
After the third entry of the incorrect password, the computer
responds with a “System Disabled” message and provides an
override password.
3. On another computer running Windows XP, download the
unlock6.exe utility from the HP Channel Services Network
(CSN) Web site. Copy the
unlock6.exe utility into the root directory (C:\ drive).
4. Access MS-DOS by clicking Start > All Programs >
Accessories > Command Prompt.
5. Enter unlock6 xxxxx 0, where “xxxxx” is the password
generated by the computer in step 2.
The computer responds with another system-generated
password.
6. Enter the password generated in step 5 on the disabled
computer to enter the system BIOS. In the BIOS, navigate
to the Security tab and Administrator Password. Enter the
password generated in step 5 as the current password. Enter
a new password to change it.
7. The password has been reset and all CMOS settings have been retored.

Unlock6 Download.

HELPP dv6000 hp laptop

Hi
I have had my laptop for about 18 months now .
whilst at work my son some how managed to do something to the computer, so now when i turn it on it asks for a password instantantly.

I have read the problem above and belive it is very similar to what the other user faced. I have done uptil the step which requires to transfer the BIOS file to the C drive root.

What i did was downloaded it from hp which i am not sure if i downloaded the correct software as you said.

If its possible to give me a step by step instructions to sort the problem out.
I use this for work , and really need it.

Cheers

so your son has put a password on windows?you can get all the way there because it locked.i know another way to get past that password.alans way is quite brilliant, but i know a possible easier way.

1:boot to safe mode normally by continually pressing f8 after starting the computer.

2:when you get to the login screen for safe mode.load the administrator acct NOT YOUR ACCT NAME!

3nce in windows on that admin acct.open the control panel, and hit user accts.

4:select your user acct the one you actually use with your user name.

5:from there you can delete the password that has been set on your user name.

6:tell your son not to do that again

If You Feel We Have Helped You,and You Would Like To DONATE That Would Be Appreciated
