I am not sure if I fully understand your question. If you mean your URL history then Launch Internet Explorer. Select the Tools from the menu bar.
Then select Internet Options. From the drop down menu. Click on the general tab. Under the history section change the days to keep in history to how many you want. Another thing to think about is if you run programs that clean-up your hard drive then they are likely to be clearing your Internet history as well. Add all your favorite sites to 'My Favorites' that way it keeps your I.E. tidy and you dont lose your favorite sites.

OK, back to basics! which version of windows/I.E. are you using and have you run any clean-up programs? I have tried three different clean-up progs and then reset my I.E. history without problems so I need to know if its a registry setting.
The point I am trying to get to is if you have, or some program has, deleted your browsers temp files, then the history goes with it.

Check the size of your Internet Temp Files by doing this:
Launch Internet Explorer.
Select the Tools from the menu bar.
Then select Internet Options... from the drop down menu.
Once the internet options has loaded click on the general tab.
Under the temporary internet files section click the settings button.
A settings window will load. Slide the slider to the right to increase the size indicated in the text box on the right.

and while you are there:

Click on the advanced tab.
Under security find where it says Empty Temporary internet files folder when browser is closed and uncheck it.
