| Which operating system have you got and have you altered any of any system settings? Did this problem just occur?

EDIT: I have just tried this and it worked on my machine running XP Home,
Click on Start, then Run and type MSCONFIG
Now click on the BOOT.INI tab.
look down the list and make sure /NOGUIBOOT is unchecked, if not, uncheck it.
Restart your PC.
Hopefully all is now restored, if not let us know.
