northbridge cooling

so many people always think about there cpu when it comes to custom,or modded cooling.now cpu cooling without doubt is very important.however so is cooling the chip that does most of the intersystem comunications.that would be your northbridge chipset.its not very difficult to change your nb cooler.

here i have my motherboard out getting it ready to swap the nb cooler.you may notice my terrible photoshop circles around the white pins on the nb cooler.well they are there for a reason, and that reason is.when removing the nb cooler just roll the board over so the bottom side is up.you see those pins well the bottom of them are similar to wall anchors once they are in little hooks expand to lock it in place.simply squeeze those with a pair of needle nose pliers, and work them back through the holes on the board.take care and do not dig the pliers into the board circuit traces. < YOU WILL DESTROY IT

here we have a pic with the nb cooler removed.see how dirty that looks be sure to clean that up before installing the new nb cooler.you can use rubbing alcohol,or they do make special cleaning solutions for this as well.once its cleaned up apply a very thin layer of thermal paste spread it evenly.some nb coolers will simply pop back into place like the old one.in my case i had screws, and nuts to mount my new one.be sure to use the insulative washers between the screw head, motherboard, top nut ,and motherboard.

in the final picture you can see the new nb cooler installed, and running.my nb temps dropped a good 10c from this simple upgrade.

Hi

I have found that Stock Coolers "all though do the job" are not brilliant when ie Overclocking or even playing a game for a few hours, as pharoah has mentioned chip coolers are often overlooked, when i started to Mod my system John "my Brother" said get some better coolers (and he was right), my system today has a SilenX Ixtrema Pro 40mm Copper Chipset Cooler, Cool Master X Dream III CPU Cooler, ZALMAN VF700-AlCu LED fan graphic card Cooler, these all work well in conjunction with my case cooling - 3 fans "in line" drive bay Cooler, 1 top of the case 80mm Fan (Mod), 1 80mm case fan at the back, 1 system blower at the back, total of 8 fans to keep things

was looking at temps just a while ago.had a few things running i was at about 50% cpu usage across both cores.then i opened speedfan to see what my temps were.

it reported
cpu 30c
hdd 0 30c
northbridge 26c

so as you can see that nb cooler replacement was well worth 24$+shipping,and the little bit of my time to change it.
