P4 & 6600GT OCd

Hi

I did Overclock my system at one time but now i run my system clock speeds as stock because i found the gains to be minimal, my system is used for general use not just games. my spec ---

PSU Akasa PaxPower 460w
MoBo Asrock P4i45GV R5.0
Intel Pentium P 4 CPU 2.80GHz
Cooler Master Premium Silent CPU Cooler - P4
Ram 2GB, 2048MB
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT
HDDs
Samsung SP1654N 150GB
Seagate Barracuda 7200 200GB
Sound Card SIIG SoundWave 7.1 PCI
Monitor Sony 19" x-black technology LCD SDM-HS95 P/R – DVI
Keyboard Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard
Mouse Labtec wireless optical

I pushed the CPU to 3GHz via increasing the FSB in BIOS in increments of 2 and OCd my Graphics Card via Winfox Speedrunner, 9 % increase GHz and run systems stability checks using Prime95-24.14 and Burn Max. the only problem with Overclocking is that it will shorten the life of components and one thing to remember ( DON'T overclock what you CAN'T afford to replace and make sure you have good cooling)

i agree the main thing overclocking shortens the life of is the motherboard.in most cases except extreme overclocking the cpu's life isnt affected much.that is if it is kept cool heat is the killer of cpu's.im in the same boat there cyberbabe ive recently set mine back to stock clocks.

my 2 pence

I look at oc'ing this way:

Most cpu's/ram/gpu's are good for 10 years. I'm (as are most people) going to upgrade within 2 or 3 years, and your 'standard' level of oc'ing tends to halve the life of your components.

My X6800 is running at 3.6 at 1.4v, stock on the mobo it runs at 1.29v. The extra heat increase (if its a concern) can be offset by a decent hsf. Core2's (of the 2 core variety) Don't have a huge tdp and are good to run, stabily, at 60c. I primarily use extra active cooling on the ram dimms as these get a tad toasty at 2.4v. I think i need better oc'ing ram considering the oc i got at that voltage.

You're only going to affect your mobo (really) if you up the fsb (in the case of Intel chips), if you've a top-locked cpu then you don't really have a choice. But if your cpu has an unlocked multiplier then the only problem is the extra voltage through the cpu, which is mostly offset by the hsf.

Oc'ing can give you a level of performance of a much higher cost chip. I had my E6400 at 2.9 odd ghz, the stock speed of my new cpu, a 400.00 quid saving give or take. I'm happy to knock a few years off for that.
