Setting up and securing a webserver

I've always been wanting to setup a test webserver at home. I don't need it to connect to the interent, but would like to be able to access it from the other PCs on my LAN.

I've got Red Hat Linux 9 installed with GNOME as the desktop.

Can someone post some instructions on how best to set up a test webserver?

I want to be able to mess about with PHP and MySQL without needing to upload files to my production server.

What needs to be done to make the system secure? I've heard somewhere that it's best not to install the X window system?

Apache 2 or 1.x?

Thanks.
