Please help!

We have a WinMe pc and a Win98 pc with a cross over cable and dial up internet.

We have been using the Me pc as a direct connection to the internet and the 98 box "piggybacking" from it. Internet connection sharing and file sharing has been enabled on the Me box.
It was working perfectly.

I have since obtained a second hand pc from work that has Win2000 installed on it. And I would like to network it to the Me pc and have access to the internet via the Me machine as we always had.

I've tried to hook the two up together, the same way the 98 machine was, but it is not working.

I don't have much knowledge on networking.

Could someone out there please help me with my problem.

The first thing to check is that if the Win 98 machine is formatted with FAT32 and the Win2000 machine is formatted with NTFS then it cannot read it.
Check how the hard drives/partitions are formatted and post back.
If you are not sure how the check, click on 'My Computer' select the 'C' drive and right click on it, select 'Properties' and it will tell you the file format.

Help us to help you!
Be specific with your problem and tell us your machines specs.

I've no need to hook the Win 98 machine to the Win 2000 machine.

I need to hook the Win 2000 to the WinMe machine. But they're all right as far as the file formats are concerned.

Ok, onto the next step!

Routers & Switches

Hi, I accidently bought a netgear SWITCH (5 port gigabit ethernet switch, model #GS605) instead of a router. Can I run 2 computers off the internet with a switch? It's connected to my cable modem. Is there anything I can do to make this work as a router????

Maybe. It depends on your ISP. Quite often they'll assign only one IP down the internet connection, so while the switch might get them all connected, only one will actually be able to access the internet.
A Router that does network address translation (NAT) allows them to all use the single IP address and still access the internet. A switch will also not give you the safety of a firewall that a NAT router does. My recommendation: spring for a router

Thanks Alan,
I was afraid that was what I was going to have to do. With so many brands out there, is there one that you recommend? I only have 2 computers I need to hook-up to the net.
