networking using winxp

i can set up my router, but i have no idea what to do on the windows side. i DO NOT want ics or print sharing, all i want is to take 1 dhcp conn and make it 2, using my d-link wired router. currently i have connections set up on both computers, from their previous service. do i delete these "old" network setups or do i just install , close my eyes and wake up in kansas wearing rose colored glasses? also are there any 'recovery' tricks i should know...like how to recover from a power fail, how to install after a format?? and yes i have googled this request! tks
