What to look for in a new computer

Hi,
Could some of you computer experts give some specs to look for when buying a new computer? I would like a desk top with flat screen. I'm looking to spend between $800-$1,000. I guess what I would like help with is:

Brand name
Type of processor(Intel, AMD, etc)
RAM-amount?
Any additional components that you think I would need.

Cost after rebates $883.00

Specs:

- 2.66 GHz P4
- 512 MB DDR Ram
- 17 in Flat panel
- 64 MB GeForce4 MX
- 80 GB Hard Drive
- CD - ROM
- CD Burner


It wasnt a bad deal. Just check their website every now and then and you will catch a deal.

May I Say, for anyone who is looking for a new computer, that price insanely low. That is a great computer for that price.
