Wink Happy Birthday to Windows!

Windows 1.0 hit the market in November 1985, which makes the Windows operating system family twenty years old and me a damb site older . Want a quick reminder of what that first version looked like?

It was released on five 360KB 5.25 floppy's. Although small with no icons for executable programs, no program groups, no real multitasking it was better than MS-DOS. The most modern graphic card was a EGA (Enhanced graphic adapter) with 64 KByte RAM capable of displaying 16 colours on a 640*350 pixel resolution.

Very interesting. The first OS I used was Windows 95 hehe.

Here's a question for you Alan. Windows 1.0 was not MS-DOS right? Or it was MS-DOS based? Why is there MS-DOS written at the top. I can't understand this MS-DOS was released before, am I right?

Yes, MS-DOS was released well before.

08/12/1981 MS-DOS 1.0 shipped with the new IBM Personal Computer

All Windows versions prior to Windows 95 were installed over MS-Dos, that is why you see the image as it is.

And MS DOS (which neant Microsoft Disc Operating System) was.......

MSDOS was a disk operating system for the IBM range (or compatibles) of computers. The MSDOS system resided on diskette (3.5" or 5.25") and the system files could be transferred to a hard disk unit.
For personal computers, MSDOS was a single user, single tasking operating system.

The main system parts of MSDOS consisted of three files
MSDOS.SYS
IO.SYS
COMMAND.COM

IO.SYS implemented MSDOS as seen by the hardware. It had default device drivers for
console display and keyboard
printer
serial communications
clock
boot disk drive

MSDOS.SYS implemented MSDOS as seen by application programs. It supported
file and record management
memory management
character device input and output
execution of other programs
access to a real-time clock

COMMAND.COM was the shell program which interpretated user commands, presented the shell prompt, and contained a set of internal commands.

The first version of Dos that I had on a PC was 3.3. But I remember going from store to store looking for a 5.0 upgrade disk so that I could take advantage of the new memory management features that it offered.

The good old days. Makes me feel old.

Thos files Alan mentioned are still being used by todays operating systems right? I remember studying them, and I am supposed to know what is their job too (Windows Booting?) I think it's time to revise "oops!!" Infact we still use those files together with others in boot disks when troubleshooting, correct me if wrong

Can you tell us what was the main function of Windows 20 years ago, was simple word processing possible for example, or was it used mainly for storing documents etc...?
