Thursday evening a strange thing happened! Both our PC's crashed big style. As of yet, I have no idea why, but neither machine would start in safe mode, nothing.
After fighting with my main machine for many hours, I just gave up and decided to format the hard drive and start again, but that was just the start of my problems!
Of course, I am one of them people that always tells others to back-up their hard drives, but never gets around to backing up my own
After installing XP, it downloaded the updates ok and I got online ok, but as soon as SP2 was installed - nothing. No matter what I did, I could not get an internet connection. I phoned my ISP support desk and for over an hour we went through every setting, every possible cause and ping tests. Still nothing. I formatted again and exactly the same thing. Now the thing to rember is that I had SP2 for months without any problems, so why now?
Again I opted out for a format, after many hours of trying error search the problem. This time, I did not allow the PC to download the updates from Microsoft, I updated the virus definitions first and then did a full system scan. I found 29 viruses of various types, 16 of which were sasser worm variants. How the hell I got attacked so bad just from registering with Microsoft, I have no idea.
Of course when I downloaded all the updates including SP2 all is fine again with the exception that I have to reinstall everything again.
So how was your Easter?
