| Wal-Mart Selling First Hazardous Substance-Free Notebook Following other manufacturers' early compliance of the RoHS directive, Toshiba and Wal-Mart are selling the world's first RoHS compliant notebook.
For those of you not familiar with the European Parliament's Restriction on Harzardous Substance directive, here's a quick overview of it:
RoHS is Directive 2002/95/EC of the European Parliament with the goal to reduce the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium and both polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants in the production of new electrical and electronic equipment. This regulation goes into effect on July 1, 2006 in European Markets. There is no such requirement for the United States of America.
RoHS compliance is nothing new in the computer industry: most hard drives are RoHS compliant, as are AMD's processors (We're not sure about Intel). But a completely RoHS compliant notebook is indeed a first! |
