fatman_joe is on a distinguished road
i now cant access internet at all

hello. i have had this problem now for about three months but since uni is starting again i should really get it sorted now. i had a virus on my computer a while back so had my hard drive wiped to get rid of it. unfortunately, this has meant that a)the graphics on my computer have gone minimal and more importantly b)i have lost internet connection.

i use windows ME and so far had done me fine. there are five of us in the house sharing one port for a connection but everytime i try and log onto the internet it comes up as "page cannot be displayed". i have tried doing everything i know but unfortunately i know very little about computers. if you could give me any advice that would be great.

the other problem is the graphics. im not too bothered because i only really use my computer for work purposes but if you could tell me how to change my screen resolution that would be brilliant

HEY fatman_joe. Lets begin with the easy steps. You said that your resolution is very low. First of all lets see you display properties (Right-click on the desktop, Properties, and settings). Now you can change and apply new changes. If you can see there's also the Screen Resolution, and the Color Quality (make sure it is 16bit or 32 bit, depending on your VGA card). Press apply and notice if any changes. If that do not solve your problem lets see if your driver is installed well since you have wiped your HDD.

To do so, just right-click on My Computer, Poperties, Hardware, Device Manager. And tell us if everything is installed properly. You will know if there are yellow signs ('?' or '!') near a device driver; in this case under display Adapters. If there is any sign, it means that maybe the driver is not installed properly or it isn't installed. You may have to reboot after installation.

Try these first, so than we can work on the internet connection.

If five of you are sharing a port then its safe to assume the port is fine. Are you using dial-up or broadband?
If its dial-up then you need to configure your Internet Connection with the help of your ISP. i.e. you will need your logon info, the isp's connection number.
