Question explorer crashed

hello all,

this is my first visit to the forum, i'm not very computer literate so you'll have to forgive me.

i have a packard bell PC with a ME operating system, about a month ago norton anti-virus told me to delete some files, i did this but when i turned my comuter back on it had taken me back to about 3 months previously. now my internet explorer keeps saying 'internet explorer cannot open the search page' and 'page can't be displayed'. i have a BT wireless network 1250 and i can get a connection, the BT man even ran me through it, so its not that, i'm pretty sure its just the internet explorer is being crap. i tried to install internet explorer 6 but it said it needed to download more files from the internet and of course it couldn't. please can someone give me some hints or tips to rectify this.

kind regards

You dont say which version of internet explorer you have so its difficult to advise as the re-install methods vary from version to version.
Have a look at this knowledge-base article. , it will tell you how to un-install and re-install your version of I.E.

There are some applications or games as well that come with a version of Internet Explorer on the cd to be used for online documentation, you might want to check some of your cd's and see if they have a copy of ie on them.

Method 1: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
Select the OK button.
Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

Method 2: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

Finally, if you cannot re-install explorer using the methods above then you will have to perform an XP repair. Click here for a detailed walkthrough.
Read it carefully because if you have to take this route, you only want to repair windows, not lose everything and start again.

Please let us know how you get on.
