Connection problems

I'm wondering if someone can help me connect to the internet, I'm defeated. Background:
I'm not very technical with computers

Computer - Compaq Intel Core2 6400@2.13GHz, 2GB RAM
OS - Windows XP Media Centre Edition Version 2002 Service pack 2
Network card - Intel 82562V 10/100 Netwrok Connection

6 months old, has been connected fine to the internet up until a couple of months ago, don't know what caused the failure.

It's connected through a Netgear Fast Ethernet Switch 10/100Mbps 8 port, along with 3 other computers, all connected fine. I've tried swapping the ports/leads and no joy.

I've run the compaq and windows helps, no joy. Can someone help please, I'm totally stumped?
Thanks
PS am in UK if that's relevant

first would need to ask you a question,or two.is the lan port disabled? ( i know that seems to simple, but can cause the problem) is there a yellow triangle on you connection icon? also have you setup a static ip addy on any of your machines?

Well there are two, one (Local Area COnnection) is good and says it's connected. The other (Local Area Connection 2) says there is little or no connectivity.

No I'm pretty sure not, nothing I'm aware of has changed since it was working

can you confirm which one of those two ports has the cable connected to it.if its the one that says limited or no connectivity.then swap the cable over to the other port.if both are pluged in disable one,or the other.

there is only one socket. One of those connections is with a 'loopback adaptor', what is this, it doens't seem to be a normal network adaptor?
