Problems After Using SpySubtract

This problem was PM'ed to me, I have moved it to the general forums so that everybody can view it.

I utilized a program called SpySubtract. It found 54 "threats" & recommended I delete them, which I did. I can't access Hotmail or MSN download page. Hotmail tells me I need to download IE but when I select this option it displays Server Error in 'Library/Errorpages" Application & then a "runtime" error directing me to create something in web.config. in order to view the error but I don't know how to do this or where it's located. Windows Media Player 10 tells me my browser doesn't support cookies, scripting is disabled, my browser doesn't support tables, doesn't support IE & my IE version is lower than 5.0. Some web pages are not displaying correctly. It seems this program deleted some files I need but I can't figure out how to get them back. I'm operating on XP SP2 & have IE 6.0. I also attempted a system restore to 1 day prior to running the SpySubtract but that didn't do anything. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, the only good reviews about SpySubtract that I have read have been written by themselves!

One likely cause of IE and OE not functioning properly is a corrupted file. (You dont mention Outlook Express, so I will add it anyway).

To run a check on the files and see if one or more is corrupted use the System File Checker that is included with Windows XP.
Click on Start then Run and type sfc /scannow in the box.
Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow
It is possible that you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP disc. If you don't have it available there is no point in continuing unless you have the files available on your hard drive. In which case post back and I will tell you how to edit the registry to force XP to find the files on your hard drive.
If you do not have the XP installation disc and are not sure if the files were copied to your hard drive, another way is to try and correct the problem by editing the registry and reinstalling Internet Explorer.
The usual cautions apply when editing the registry, back it up first as a little mistake can result in you having to re-install windows from scratch.
If you are having problems only with Internet Explorer , proceed as follows:
Click on Start then Run and type Regedit and press enter.
Navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
If you have a value called IsInstalled, click on it and change the value from 1 to 0.
If you don’t have that value, click in the right pane and select DWORD, call it IsInstalled then give it a value of 0
Exit Registry
If you are having problems with Outlook Express , proceed as follows:
Click on Start then Run and type Regedit and press enter.
Navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}
If you have a value called IsInstalled, click on it and change the value from 1 to 0.
If you don’t have that value, click in the right pane and select DWORD, call it IsInstalled then give it a value of 0
Exit Registry
If you are having problems with both Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, proceed as follows:
Change the values in both of the registry keys as outlined above.
Exit Registry
Once you have made the appropriate registry changes use the link below to download and install Internet Explorer 6.
The Internet Explorer 6 download includes Outlook Express 6.
Reboot and test it.

I ran sfc /scannow (I wasn't prompted to insert a disk). The scan ran and when it was finished the box disappeared. No information beyond that was displayed - should there have been? I went to the IE6 link you provided & attempted to install IE6 SP1 (the only option available) - which failed with a pop up box indicating a newer version was detected and installation was stopped automatically. I then checked my IE version as they directed at the IE6 page/link you sent and typed "winver" at the run box. It showed I have version 5.1 (Build2600xpsp._sp2_rtm.040803-2158 : Service Pack 2). I found another command while surfing Microsoft Support website and also typed at the run box "msinfo32" and it shows I have IE version 6.0.2900.2180IC. I believe created recovery discs (only) because when I first brought my computer home it kept prompting that I needed to create them on my own and it could only be done once. This process generated 8 CD's. I really don't want to run a complete recovery because I have a ton of documents I really need and numerous "favorites" I utilize on a regular basis. I didn't back up (not sure how to do that on my system - have done it on other systems before, but not mine) to edit the registry as you suggested, so I didn't attempt that. What should I do now? Something is obviously amiss. I checked Outlook Express 6 too (there are 2 users). One mailbox was set up to export from Hotmail and won't transfer the information to Outlook. Mine was exporting from MSN and working fine.

Also, I un-installed Windows Media Player 10 and tried to re-install it and got the following error:

Server Error in '/Windows' Application.

You cannot re-install IE or OE if you do not edit the registry, it just cannot be done! From your post, I would suggest that you print out my earlier suggestions, try them then post back.
