Smile How To Repair/Reinstall IE6 and OE6

Many of the problems we get involve repairing or re-installing IE6 and OE6, so here is a 'How To'

One likely cause of IE and OE not functioning properly is a corrupted file.
To run a check on the files and see if one or more is corrupted use the System File Checker that is included with Windows XP.
Click on Start then Run and type sfc /scannow in the box.
Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow
It is possible that you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP disc. If you don't have it available there is no point in continuing unless you have the files available on your hard drive. In which case post back and I will tell you how to edit the registry to force XP to find the files on your hard drive.
If you do not have the XP installation disc and are not sure if the files were copied to your hard drive, another way is to try and correct the problem by editing the registry and reinstalling Internet Explorer.
The usual cautions apply when editing the registry, back it up first as a little mistake can result in you having to re-install windows from scratch.
If you are having problems only with Internet Explorer , proceed as follows:
Click on Start then Run and type Regedit and press enter.
Navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
If you have a value called IsInstalled, click on it and change the value from 1 to 0.
If you don’t have that value, click in the right pane and select DWORD, call it IsInstalled then give it a value of 0
Exit Registry
If you are having problems only with Outlook Express , proceed as follows:
Click on Start then Run and type Regedit and press enter.
Navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}
If you have a value called IsInstalled, click on it and change the value from 1 to 0.
If you don’t have that value, click in the right pane and select DWORD, call it IsInstalled then give it a value of 0
Exit Registry
If you are having problems with both Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, proceed as follows:
Change the values in both of the registry keys as outlined above.
Exit Registry
Once you have made the appropriate registry changes use the link below to download and install Internet Explorer 6.
The Internet Explorer 6 download includes Outlook Express 6.
Reboot and test it.
