As I suggested a few last month, another laptop manufacturer has come forward and recalled some of their batteries.
Toshiba is to replace about 340,000 laptop computer batteries worldwide in the third recall of faulty batteries made by Sony since mid-August.
The batteries, used in Toshiba’s Dynabook and Dynabook Satellite laptops made between March and May of this year, could lose all their power.
You can contact Toshiba Customer Service at (800) 457-7777 or visit there website at www.toshiba.com

Oh… I was going to buy a Toshiba laptop in 2 weeks time. There was another report of a Dell laptop at the Yahoo! Mission College campus in Silicon Valley. Hundred of employees were evacuated. You can see pictures here:

Well Daniel, I would suggest that which ever laptop model you buy, you still contact the manufacturer and request information on the battery make and model if it is not clearly marked.
There is likely still companies out their who have yet to announce their recall.

I found information about their batteries, well most of them, since Toshiba I think have detailed information about their batteries on their website. Is it this what you’re saying? Are there different batteries for notebooks? I never owned one so I don’t know.

I was trying to say, that if you do not buy a Toshiba, Dell, or Apple, still contact the manufacturer or research the batteries, as there are still likely laptop makers who use problem batteries that have yet to issue a recall.
Hope that is more clear.

[...] As we stated previously, even if you do not have one of the laptop’s affected by the recent recall of Toshiba, Apple, and Dell, you would be safer to contact your manufacturer and ask if there has been any reports of battery problems by your laptop model. [...]

A 40-Hour Laptop Battery by a (Silicon) Whisker
The latest breakthrough in lithium ion battery technology may not sound all that impressive. After all, we’re just talking about some modifications to the battery’s anode - a set of silicon whisker-like wires - hardly anything earthshattering. Yet, if you believe the claims of Stanford materials scientist Yi Cui, this modification could allow batteries to store up to 10 times the charge of conventional rechargeables - enough juice to power a laptop for almost 2 full days.

Dwight Silverman, the tech reviewer at the Houston Chronicle, has written about the impact that the Aero theme has on battery life and performance (under the provocative title “Vista, Aero, battery life . . . and Doom” — he’s referring to the game Doom3, BTW). It’s a good post and I’d like to take a minute to expand on what Dwight has written.
